Sustainable structural engineering in action

It’s great to see the hub by Premier Inn on Old Marylebone Road now open. We are the structural and civil engineers for the development and first started looking at the scheme in 2016. It’s a fantastic looking building with 294 bedrooms over 13 storeys plus basement in this prestigious London location.

One of the key challenges was to work around the piles that were present under the 9 storey office building on the site. We are always looking for creative and sustainable solutions so we carried out extensive investigation, in collaboration with Geotechnical Consultants CGL, to gather archive information and carried out on-site testing. We incorporated the existing piles into a raft supplemented with new piles. This allowed us to reduce the amount of new foundation required by reusing the load bearing capacity of the existing piles. That’s sustainable structural engineering in action!

A great project team on this challenging scheme : Whitbread, Gilbert Ash, Sheppard Robson, CGL  and all the rest of the design and construction team.
