Simpson TWS is proud to see one of our residential projects overlooking Aylesbury Vale gain industry recognition, having been featured in The Architects’ Journal. This striking two-storey steel frame home showcases the value of close collaboration and coordinated design, bringing together complex structural and civil engineering challenges to deliver a refined architectural vision.
Working in partnership with Flint Architects, the project demonstrates how innovative engineering solutions can enable bold design intent, even on technically constrained sites.
A key feature of the scheme was the ambition to create a light-filled, open-plan home with expansive glazing and minimal visible structure. Simpson TWS supported this vision through the careful design of a bespoke steel frame, engineered to accommodate:
- Large clear-span glazing panels, maximising views across Aylesbury Vale
- A cantilevered first-floor corner, delivering a dramatic architectural statement
- A structure with concealed support elements, maintaining a clean, uninterrupted aesthetic
Achieving these goals required detailed structural analysis, particularly to control torsion and deflection across sensitive glazed areas. Maintaining strict performance limits was essential to ensure both structural integrity and the long-term performance of the glazing systems.
To preserve the open-plan layout, lateral stability was achieved through a combination of discreet bracing and diaphragm action, carefully integrated into the building fabric. This approach ensured the structure remained robust without compromising the architectural vision.
The project’s remote location presented additional challenges from a civil engineering perspective, particularly with limited access to traditional drainage infrastructure. We worked closely with the client and the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) to develop a tailored solution that met both planning requirements and environmental standards.
This project is a strong example of how integrated design and teamwork between architects, engineers, and stakeholders can achieve exceptional results. By aligning structural and civil engineering strategies with architectural ambition, the team was able to deliver a home that is both technically robust and visually striking.
