Temple of Venus, Stowe Garden

We gave structural engineering advice and site investigation works to enable remedial repair works by the National Trust. The temple has suffered significant deterioration in the soft limestone with some associated local structural movement and two quadrant wings have suffered significant settlement.

The Temple of Venus was originally constructed in 1731 and is located in a prominent position overlooking the 11 acre lake towards Stowe House. The design is a Palladian style with a central pedimented block flanked by colonnaded quadrant wings terminating in stone pavilions with open arches.

The temple is a rectangular structure with a main central space at upper ground level and further accommodation at lower ground. Construction is in ashlar Helmdon limestone with various niches and ornamentations. A 3 bay portico with pediment forms the southern elevation. The roof is of timber construction with a large self-supporting barrel vault ceiling below.
