We provided full structural and civil engineering design services to this central Swindon project. The demolition of a 1970’s office building has made way for a new Premier Inn. The project is an important part of the economic redevelopment plan for the area and has been built to progressive sustainability standards. The original basement car park was infilled and the hotel is formed with a single storey transfer frame and a metframe superstructure with foundations both inside and outside of the basement. The scheme involved significant geotechnical and structural analysis to review the differing ground conditions and to limit the effect of differential settlement.
The building is powered entirely by renewable energy via an air source heat pump and on-site solar panels. Energy efficiency is driven by a building envelope designed to meet BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards and with heat exchange with the outside minimised through use of natural sunlight, re-use of heat generated by electrical equipment and mechanical ventilation with passive heat recovery.
